Protect your skin this Summer.

We all know its summer and we need to wear sunscreen and protect our skin. With so many products on the market it is hard to tell what is the best and the safest.

Here is a breakdown of what ingredients are in sunscreen and what spf is the best to wear.

What are Suncreens?

Sunscreens are products combining several ingredients that help prevent the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. Two types of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, damage the skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Sunscreens vary in their ability to protect against UVA and UVB.

What Are UVA and UVB?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is part of the electromagnetic (light) spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun. It has wavelengths shorter than visible light, making it invisible to the naked eye. Ultraviolet A (UVA) is the longer wave UV ray that causes lasting skin damage, skin aging, and can cause skin cancer. Ultraviolet B (UVB) is the shorter wave UV ray that causes sunburns, skin damage, and can cause skin cause skin cancer.

What Is SPF?

Most sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against UVB. SPF — or Sun Protection Factor — is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Here's how it works: If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer — about five hours.

Another way to look at it is in terms of percentages: SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent. They may seem like negligible differences, but if you are light-sensitive, or have a history of skin cancer, those extra percentages will make a difference. And as you can see, no sunscreen can block all UV rays.

But there are problems with the SPF model: First, no sunscreen, regardless of strength, should be expected to stay effective longer than two hours without reapplication. Second, "reddening" of the skin is a reaction to UVB rays alone and tells you little about what UVA damage you may be getting. Plenty of damage can be done without the red flag of sunburn being raised

Physical vs. Chemical Suncreen

There are two general types of suncreens, physical and chemical. Physical suncreens protect your skin from the sun by deflecting or blocking the sun's rays. Chemical suncreens work be absorbing the sun's rays.

Physical blocks include, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide. Chemical suncreens include, octinaxate, avobenzone, octisalate, and oxybenzone.

When chemical and physical suncreens are both used together the suncreen is then called "broad-spectrum."

What Does Broad-Spectrum Mean?

Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Beginning in December 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will implement new rules for "broad-spectrum" products.

Celebrity AntiAging Secrets- You can get them too!

Recently we read Cosmopolitan's article on “Why They Still Look This Fantastic”. There are so many celebrities over the age of 40 who continue to look young and vibrant. Who doesn’t think Jennifer Lopez has flawless skin and she is over 40! Cosmo has the same advice that we give to our clients.

1) “They are obsessive about sunscreen”
Sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen!

Wear it every day. The sun is the number one factor in aging skin. We carry EltaMD, the best line of sunscreen available, affordable, and Paraben Free. EltaMD is recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation.

2) “They were the first to fall in love with retinoids”
Retinoids – erase fine lines, unclog pores, boost collagen, and speed cell turnover to even out skin discoloration and smooth skin. Apply Tretinoin every night at bedtime.

3) “They’re exfoliating queens”
As we age, skin cell turnover slows down. This can lead to dull and rough appearing skin. We offer several options to help you exfoliate and let your skin glow. We have product, Facials, Chemical Peels, and even Microlaser Peels. Ask our clinicians which option would benefit you the most.

4) “They never tolerate a skin freak-out”
We have a solution- our Obagi NuDerm System. Using the kit daily, you will notice your skin transform. You will be less prone to breakouts.

Wash your face twice a day using Obagi cleanser and then apply Toner. In the morning, apply Clear, which contains hydroquinone to correct hyperpigmentation. You will then need to apply Exfoderm which contains alpha-hydroxy acid to removes old skin cells while promoting new cells for lighter and brighter skin. At night, you will appIy Blender with Tretinoin.

5) “They’re proactive with injectables and fillers”
No more wrinkles- Botox is available and one of our most popular treatments.
Over time as we lose collagen, our face begins to sag. Our cheeks lose their plumpness and our frown lines become more prominent. Injectables can help plump your face by adding volume. They can also fill in your frown lines which make them less noticeable.
Ask us about Juvederm and Radiesse. Our clinicians can customize a treatment for you.

Come visit us. You can have young and vibrant skin- just like the celebrities.

Who are we???

When trying to figure out creative posts that we could write about on our blog, we came up with several. Although many of them where great ideas (I am sure we will use them in the future) our favorite had to do with getting to know our physicians and staff better.

If you check out our BRAND NEW AMAZING website http://paalc.com (see below for more information on this) you will find profiles of our staff and information on their educational background; these are all really important things to know when deciding a physician. It’s also important (well maybe not as important), but it’s really fun to get to know these people on a more personal level, and what better way than to have them answer 25 really random, funny questions???

It’s always fun to answer questions about yourself that you don’t normally think about, but it’s even MORE fun to read the answers of other people because it gives you a little glimpse into their life. It helps showcase their personality in a way that you may not ever get the chance to see on a normal day-to-day basis…especially if they are your doctor.

So, over the next couple of weeks we will be spotlighting our staff members and physicians. Hopefully you will come to know them a little better, but if nothing else, we are confident you will get a laugh out of some of their answers! Stay tuned…

On a side note…our NEW website has launched! We simply cannot go any further with this post without mentioning the details on our new BEAUTIFUL website http://paalc.com! We are soooooo excited to have this up and running. We have put a ton of thought and consideration into what you might want out of a website, so we hope you find it user friendly and over flowing with information!!! Please feel free to comment and let us know what you think, or if you have any suggestions those are more than welcome too!

Holiday Prep Beauty Secrets!

It is November already and we can hardly believe that the holiday season is just around the corner! It’s that time of year when we start asking the many important questions: Who is going to cook the stuffing? Where are we all meeting for the holidays? What the heck am I going to buy for Cousin Eddy this year?

Although there are so many important things we need to think about during this time, it’s also important to not forget about ourselves too! After all, we all want to look and feel our best for the holidays. Why not treat yourself to a few things along the way to make yourself feel extra special too.

For this reason and many more we are so excited to present our final educational seminar of the year. We have saved the best for last, and can’t wait to share some wonderful ideas, new products and fantastic procedures with you. The breakdown of the evening looks like this:

*Dr. Bhatla will discuss ProLipo, explaining all about this wonderful, minimally invasive, procedure that can re-shape many areas of your body and get rid of localized body fat.

*Dr. Neff will be presenting on how sclerotherapy can help you get rid of those spider veins you may have wanted to get rid of for awhile.

*Nancy, our medical aesthetician and make up artist extraordinaire, will be demonstrating and discussing several of our new jane iredale products as well as showing you how to get a lovely holiday look in only a few minutes.

Not only are we presenting on some pretty amazing things, but we are also offering all attendees a $50 gift card to be used on any medical aesthetic service as well as several other pretty great specials.

Pure Impact...Pure Genius!!!

The fall collection for jane iredale has just been released and we are in love!!!! It is called Pure Impact and they couldn't have named it any better. If you wear this you will, without a doubt, make an impact. (in a positive way of course!) We had the privilege of seeing this collection first hand before ordering it, and it is absolutely beautiful. It just arrived here at Premier Aesthetic & Laser Centre this week, and we are so excited to share it with you!
There are several pieces to this collection which are all equally great and can all be used together to create the perfect customized look for you. To give you a better idea let's break them down for you:

Eye Steppers: These things are AMAZING. There are three different compacts to choose from, but it is easier than that...they are broken down into eye color. So, if you have green eyes, you want the compact made especially for green eyes. (pictured to the left) There is also one for blue and brown eyes as well. There are five shadows per compact chosen to compliment each eye color beautifully, AND you can create many different unique looks with just the five shades. We love this idea and the colors are sure to make a "pure impact"! (cheesy I know, but I couldn't resist)

Lip Fixation: These handy, double duty lip stains/glosses are genius! Although lip fixation itself is not a new product, they have introduced three brand new colors for fall and to say they are beautiful is an understatement. The colors they have created follow the fall trends to a tee. Fixation is a nice berry stain, devotion is a shade of coral perfection, and rapture is a pretty bright pop of red. Chose one or get them all because you can't go wrong with any of them!
You can check out all of the details on their website http://www.janeiredale.com We are obviously very enthusiastic over these products hence the novel we just wrote about them, but don't take our word for it...come in and see them for yourselves because we are positive you will be saying to yourself..."Pure Impact, Pure Genius!!!!"
